A cheeky pre-season decision made by Valleys Tevita Cocker has proven to be catalyst for a history-making moment.
Returning to action for the Roosters after a year off, the hard-running second rower signed his wife Lillian up at the same time he committed to the Pillar Street club.
Now the couple will write their names in the 47th Battalion Carnival history books as the Toowoomba Clydesdales first ever husband and wife rep pairing.
“I wasn’t going to play this year and I’m not sure if Lillian was either,” Tevita said.
“But after I found work locally I went back to Valleys and said I was keen to play.
“When I signed up I asked if I could sign Lillian up as well.
“I went home that night, told her, we looked at each other and laughed.”
A late call-up to the squad, Tevita said he is excited to be making his debut for the rep team.
The fact his wife is in the same situation makes the occasion even more special.
“I was trying to organise a babysitter for the weekend so I could head to Bundy and watch Lillian play,” he said.
“When I got the call … it was amazing, something really special and sharing it with my wife is even better.”
Playing at centre and in the second row Lillian said she is excited about the challenge ahead.
“I really wasn’t thinking about playing this year,” she said.
“I’m glad I am though, it’s been a good season so far.
“I’m really looking forward to the carnival, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, we have a great bunch of girls.”
The 47th Battalion Carnival will be played in Bundaberg on June 7 and 8.
Tevita and Lillian believe Toowoomba has teams capable of winning the coveted title.
