EQUESTRIAN: They came from far and wide for their shot at regional glory, with one eye on the upcoming states.
The IOR Rural Interschool Queensland Darling Downs and SWQ Regional Championship was held at the Toowoomba Showgrounds at the weekend.
After the disappointment of last year’s event being cancelled, a bumper field of 110 riders descended on the Garden City, much to the delight of event organisers.
“Last year we didn’t get to hold one due to COVID, but numbers were up this year,” Darling Downs and SWQ Interschool Equestrian secretary Kirsty Ostwald said.
“We get riders from as far as Roma, and there are a lot of boarders in Toowoomba schools that come from a wide range of districts.
“The big thing with Interschool is the state championships are at the end of June, with a lot of riders trying to get their state qualifiers to be able to compete at Maryborough.
“It’s a big step on the way to the event, and they beauty is we were able to showcase primary and secondary competition in the disciplines of dressage, showjumping, show horse and combined training.”
Ostwald said families are a big part of the sport
“Our committee isn’t just Toowoomba based, but spread across the Downs and the South West,” she said.
“A lot of families enjoy the sport and there’s a great social side to it. One of the drawcards for equestrian is it’s a different level for Interschool.
“It’s been around for a long time but it’s really starting to take off now.
“Businesses from the Downs and South West really put their money behind this event.”
The weekend turned out to be one to remember for Fairholme College, with the girls enjoying success across the board.
They finished the event as Champion primary school, Champion secondary school and Overall Champion school to cap off a stellar showing.
