Phat Burgers celebrates 15 years of business with Sunday big birthday bash

Through natural disasters, global pandemics and building sales, a popular Toowoomba business will celebrate a milestone birthday this weekend, with the public encouraged to come along. See what’s happening here.

A dedication to creating the best burgers across the Darling Downs, while supporting fellow businesses has seen a Toowoomba store celebrate a special milestone.

Iconic venue Phat Burgers originally began in a former chicken shop, after co-owner Alan Wynn spotted a gap in the market.

Mr Wynn was living in Bondi when he took a trip up north hoping for a change of scenery, and struggled to find a worthy burger.

“I knew we had to do something. There were so many cafes in Toowoomba, but I knew we needed to do hot lunches and burgers,” he said.

A decade and a half later, Phat Burgers has survived through natural disasters, global pandemics, worker shortages, venue purchases and more.

Mr Wynn has seen the region change, grow, and go from “strength to strength”, including welcoming fellow interstate businessmen to set up shop in the Garden City.

During the 2010/2011 floods, Mr Wynn said it was crucial for the team to assist emergency services, and was soon a regular spot for people seeking coffee and a hot meal during the clean up.

Australian Federation Party candidate for Groom Ryan Otto won the Phatburgers Berghofer burger eating competition during the 2022 Federal Election run.

“I would duck around and help as many people as I could, and I remember people really appreciate that,” he said.

The catering business has grown into a popular part of political events, including the eating competition between candidates.

Buying local was of key importance to Mr Wynn who said though it meant sometimes additional costs to burgers, it would support regional produce providers.

A key scene for singer songwriters, the Phat Burgers bar on Ruthven Street will celebrate its 15th birthday this Sunday, with live performances from 10am.
