A small town has once again been left without a post office after the sudden closure of its Community Postal Agency.
Australia Post confirmed the unexpected shutdown of the Bloomsbury Community Postal Agency last week, saying it was now looking at ways to continue providing services to the area.
In the meantime, residents have been directed to the Midge Point Community Postal Agency which is only open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9am to 12pm.
Community members quickly took to social media to express their frustration with one local describing the situation as a “very poor outcome for the community,” while another said it was a “pity” adding the community needed support.
Community Postal Agents operated by private individuals make up a large portion of post offices in rural communities, often operating as part of another business and providing mail and postage services but not agency services like bill payment and banking.
An Australia Post spokesperson thanked locals for their “patience and understanding” following the “unexpected closure” of the agency.
“Australia Post will explore options for the provision of postal services in Bloomsbury and will keep the community updated,” they said.
The news comes just a year after the postal service was reopened in Bloomsbury in a new shopfront.
