A teenage boy has been slapped with a hefty fine after he was caught driving more than 50km over the speed limit on a busy highway.

Police allege the 17-year-old was pulled over on the Bruce Highway at Calen about 9pm on July 12 after he was detected travelling 133km in a 80km zone.

The Cairns region teen was on a P1 licence police will allege.

He was handed a $1,919 fine, lost eight demerit points and had his drivers licence suspended for six months.

Mackay Crime Prevention Unit Senior Constable Donna Hill said police wanted to remind motorists to be aware that in some circumstances, vehicles which are linked to high speed incidents, could also be impounded.

“Speed enforcement patrols can be conducted at all hours of the day and in any location,” Senior Constable Donna Hill said.
