The best food truck on the Sunshine Coast has been revealed, with some new on the scene operators edging out 14 quality competitors to take out the honour.

Best food truck on Sunshine Coast revealed

A husband-and-wife Greek food truck operation has swept the field to be crowned the Sunshine Coast’s favourite.

Established by husband and wife James and Chloe Demos, Yassou Greek Street Food serves authentic Greek cuisine and is quickly becoming a favourite on the Sunshine Coast, with popular menu options including souvlaki pita wraps, loaded fries, and the mammoth Hercules box.

The couple were working out at the gym, when they jumped for joy after being told of their win in the best food truck on the Sunshine Coast poll.

“I broke down crying, James and I were jumping up and down and literally did a celebration dance in the middle of the gym,” Mrs Demos said.

“So that was exciting for everyone to watch.

“It’s a dream come true to be named best food truck on the Sunshine Coast.”

Coming from a Greek family, Yassou, which is the equivalent to saying G’day in Greece, is a way for Mr Demos to honour his heritage and culture.

“My grandfather is an Athenian and I always remember his cooking and his flavours at Christmas time, the food was just insane,” Mr Demos said.

“I wanted to be closely connected to my Greek heritage and the memory of the street food.”

Mr and Mrs Demos started the business last year after leaving their corporate careers to follow their passion for cooking.

“It was exactly this time last year, we started off in a 3m x 3m marquee because we wanted to have humble beginnings and we wanted to start literally from the ground up,” Mrs Demos added.

“We knew there was a lot of work behind it but we believed in ourselves and we just backed ourselves.

“We believed in our food and flavour and we just knew that we would get to where we want to be.”

Starting out at venues like Brouhaha Baringa, Terella Brewing at North Arm and the Mooloolaba Sunset Market, the couple went onto acquire a food truck in June and have featured at events including the Caloundra Music Festival and Mooloolaba Foreshore Festival.

They have also catered for private events, cooking for six weddings in their first year.

However, they remain committed to serving their regulars on the streets of the Sunshine Coast.

“We still want to stay really on that food truck scene at breweries, so we’re trying to find that middle ground so we can still be in the public cooking for our regulars,” Mr Demos added.

“Without our valued Yassou customers, it’s not possible.”

Yassou Greek Street Food can be found at events across the Sunshine Coast.
