From stealing cars to assaulting strangers, these are some of the Sunshine Coast dads who found themselves in court for their criminal behaviour so far this year.

The list below shows dads whose behaviour broke the law and landed them in court within the last six months.

Jesse William Jones

A court heard how a three-year-old child was used by their father to steal a skateboard from a Coolum store.

Jesse William Jones, 24, was given six months’ prison suspended for 15 months after pleading guilty to two counts of stealing in Maroochydore Magistrates Court.

The court heard Jones, who had a nine-page criminal history, had exited Arcade Box in Coolum on September 27, 2021, when his three-year-old child ran inside and left with a $99 skateboard.

Jones was watching the child take the skateboard as the child yelled out, “I’ve got it”.

When police spoke to Jones on November 17 about the theft, Jones said he had stolen the skateboard because it was the child’s birthday the next day.

Police prosecutor Mark Burrell said Jones also stole six fragrances valued at $143.95 from Chemist Warehouse at Sunnybank Plaza on October 25, 2021, at 4.55pm.

Magistrate Barry Barrett said Jones had entered early pleas of guilty and ordered he pay $143.95 compensation.

Anthony John Winkelmann

A Morayfield father-of-two was punished for driving off with four different cars using “trickery”, while also stealing over $2000 in food and fuel.

The first theft by Anthony John Winkelmann, 59, involved him riding in a Suncoast Cab and tricking the driver into believing that he had a leg problem on December 12, 2019.

Winkelmann asked the driver to retrieve a package from a house for him and once the driver had left the taxi, Winkelmann drove off in it.

Police prosecutor Mick Ruddiman said Winkelmann targeted three more strangers where he drove off with their vehicles.

Sergeant Ruddiman told the court Winkelmann had also stolen $1890 in food from Coles at Nambour, as well as $983.05 in stolen fuel from different petrol stations across South East Queensland.

Winkelmann pleaded guilty to four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, 17 counts of stealing, four counts of receiving tainted property and dangerous operation in Maroochydore Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist sentenced Winkelmann to 12 months’ prison, to be released on parole on May 3, 2022, and was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Troy Andrew Cannon

A father-of-three and FIFO worker was found with more than $100k worth of marijuana at his Mooloolah Valley home that he was dealing and offering in exchange for sexual favours, a court heard.

Troy Andrew Cannon, now 45, was given 15 months’ imprisonment suspended for three years in Maroochydore District Court on July 18, 2022.

The court heard Cannon had his Mooloolah Valley home searched on March 16 by police who seized his mobile phone that revealed he supplied or offered to supply marijuana to seven different people on 16 occasions.

On some occasions he would offer the drug in exchange for sexual favours, and on one occasion he offered to supply MDMA to someone.

During the search police found 60 plants ranging in height from 10cm to 1.5m, weighing 7.2kg.

“It is estimated that a street value is somewhere between $116,000 and $133,000,” Mr Long told the court.

Dried cannabis was also found, totalling 1.924kg with an estimated street value of $23,000 to $27,000.

Cannon pleaded guilty to 19 offences including 16 counts of supplying dangerous drugs, producing dangerous drugs, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of a drug offence.

Michael William Brown

A Lake Macdonald father-of-two was caught running a “semi-sophisticated” drug operation with a total of 94 marijuana plants growing in his backyard, a court heard.

Michael William Brown, now 59, was given 12 months’ prison suspended immediately for 12 months in Maroochydore District Court on June 13, 2022.

The court heard police searched Brown’s Lake Macdonald rural property and found 94 marijuana plants, several growing houses and greenhouses equipped with watering systems, timers, pumps, filters and led lights.

The total weight of the plants, that ranged up to a metre in height, was 7.746kg weight, and dried marijuana was also found inside the house weighing 1.316kg.

Cash of $1900 was also found in the pantry alongside some of the marijuana.

Brown admitted to police he had been growing the plants for about two months and admitted to occasionally selling the drug to his friends but said he didn’t make a profit as he would trade it for fish or prawns.

Brown pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs, producing dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of a crime.

Zeke Francis Shackleton

A father and FIFO worker was jailed for repeatedly punching a man in the face causing his lip to split in half in a popular Sunshine Coast entertainment precinct.

Zeke Francis Shackleton, 28, was sentenced in Maroochydore District Court on May 23, 2022, to two years’ prison suspended after serving three months, along with 50 hours community service to be completed within 12 months.

Crown prosecutor Alex Stark said Shackleton was at the Peak nightclub on Ocean St in Maroochydore when he got into an argument with a 34-year-old man on January 16, 2021.

Shackelton pushed the man to the ground and they were both evicted from the venue.

Shortly after, Shackleton was waiting on the street for a ride home when he saw the victim walk past with his girlfriend and another argument started.

The court heard the victim pushed his girlfriend behind his back to protect her but Shackleton saw this as a threat and approached him with clenched fists.

Shackleton then punched the victim in the face three times, with the third punch splitting his lower lip in two.

Scott Edward Coleman

A Noosa Heads dad told a court the reason he was found with 92g of marijuana he bought off the street was because the medicinal cannabis that’s prescribed to him was too expensive.

Scott Edward Coleman was sentenced to four months’ jail, suspended for two years, in the Noosa Magistrates Court.

The court heard Coleman’s home was raided by Sunshine Coast District police at 7.40am on February 8, 2022, in the search for drugs.

Police prosecutor Alison Johnstone said detectives with drug dogs in hand scaled the Noosa Heads property in Coleman’s absence and found 90g of marijuana in a glass jar along with a further 2g.

Sergeant Johnstone said police also found several canisters of medicinal cannabis in the home with receipts along with a bong and a cone piece.

Coleman pleaded guilty to possessing drugs, possessing property suspected of being used in connection with the commission of a drug offence and possessing utensils.

Damien O’Connor

A Sunshine Coast qualified builder and father of two blamed a marriage breakdown for his drunken drive where he drove “erratically” and blew four times the legal alcohol limit, a court heard.

Damien O’Connor, 40, was disqualified for nine months and fined $1200 after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in Caloundra Magistrates Court.

Police prosecutor Stuart Lydford said police received reports of a ute with a trailer driving “erratically” on the Bruce Highway near Eumundi at 11am on March 25, 2022.

“He conducted a number of lane changes that caused other vehicles to take evasive action,” Sergeant Lydford said.

“The vehicle sideswiped a metal guard rail and several white roadside traffic markers … it mounted a grass kerb as it turned into a crescent.”

O’Connor blew a reading of 0.202, four times the legal limit, after driving from where he was working in Gympie.

Magistrate Catherine Benson said the reading was “extremely high” and fined the father $1200.

Tony William Payne

A Coolum father avoided jail time for trying to defraud WorkCover of nearly $1m, a court heard.

Tony William Payne was sentenced to a nine-month suspended jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to one count of defrauding an insurer and another count of attempting to defraud an insurer.

The court heard the Coolum man successfully defrauded approximately $1855 between July 7, 2020 and August 17, 2020 and attempted to swindle a further $946,000 from WorkCover in September, 2020.

WorkCover prosecutor Thea Hadok-Quadrio relied on written submissions but suggested a 12-month prison sentence could be suspended.

Mr Stjernqvist imposed the suspended prison sentence for 18 months and Payne was ordered to pay $2500.

Joseph Daniel Taylor

A father slapped a Noosa restaurant waiter across the head after they brought the bill over to him at the table, a court heard.

Joseph Daniel Taylor, 42, was given a $750 fine in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 14, 2022.

Taylor and his young child were eating lunch at 250 Grammi Food and Wine Bar in Noosaville on January 29, 2022, when Taylor walked over to the cashier station that was being operated by a male staff member.

“The defendant accused the complainant of being rude because he had brought the bill to the table while he was seated … the defendant has pointed his finger at his face before slapping him across the head with an open right hand,” police prosecutor Phillip Stephens said.

Sergeant Stephens said CCTV footage clearly showed the “unprovoked attack” by Taylor who pleaded guilty to one count of common assault.

Mr Barrett ordered he pay $500 compensation to the victim and no conviction was recorded.

Luke Peter Hunt

A Sunshine Coast bodybuilder and father-of-six who purchased steroids and other associated drugs over the internet was punished in court.

Luke Peter Hunt, 41, was fined $500 in Maroochydore Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to two counts of attempting to possess danger drugs, seven counts of possessing dangerous drugs, buying medicines, possessing property having been acquired for a drug offence and possessing anything used in the connection of a crime.

Police prosecutor Mick Ruddiman said Hunt’s house was searched at 12pm on May 16, 2022, where detectives found steroids, multiple drugs used in conjunction with the testosterone and a large amount of new syringes and alcohol slips.

He told police “I’m using these items for body building” and that he bought the steroids online using his phone to make and track the order.

Mr McLaughlin did not record a conviction against Hunt.

Aaron David Marriage

A dad and ex-navy serviceman held captive by the Taliban will likely lose his job after failing to stop at a Bruce Highway crash he caused.

Aaron David Marriage was fined $1200 in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on May 30, 2022, after he pleaded guilty to dangerous operation and failing to comply with his duties as a driver involved in an incident.

Police prosecutor Nick Nitschke said Marriage was driving his Nissan at Coochin Creek on the Bruce Highway on August 27, 2021, when he was weaving through traffic, undertaking vehicles and making unsafe lane changes.

Marriage – who lives on the Gold Coast – was tailgating a Holden Barina and then attempted to push between two vehicles in the other lane, causing a collision between his car and the Barina.

The Barina slowed down to 60km/h and pulled over while Marriage accelerated and took off down the highway.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist fined Marriage a total of $1200 for the two offences and disqualified him from driving for six months.

A conviction was only recorded for the failing to comply charge.
