Police called to Sunshine Plaza after alleged carjacking

Sunshine Plaza management has responded over an alleged carjacking in its carpark, the second allegedly violent incident at the shopping centre in a month.

The Sunshine Plaza management has responded to the alleged violent carjacking that took place in one of its carparks.

It is the second allegedly violent incident that has taken place at the shopping centre in a month.

A 43-year-old Marcoola man was charged with one count each of robbery, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving under the influence following the incident on Wednesday, March 1.

Police will allege about 2.30pm a 29-year-old New South Wales man was punched in the face and had his red Toyota Corolla stolen in the Sunshine Plaza carpark.

The man was allegedly dragged from his car and a short struggle followed before the man was able to raise the alarm with a passer-by.

The 43-year-old man was arrested after the vehicle was stopped from exiting the shopping centre carpark at the intersection of Amaroo St and Maroochydore Rd.

Sunshine Plaza centre manager Michael Manwaring said “we’re aware of an incident” that took place Wednesday afternoon at the shopping centre.

As this is now a police matter, we are unable to comment further,” he said.

“We’re assisting police with their investigation, and as always the safety of our customers, retailers and staff is our number one priority.”

The New South Wales man suffered minor facial injuries and was treated at the scene.

The 43-year-old Marcoola man was granted police bail and will appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Wednesday, March 22.

Police said one crew had been in nearby Mungar St, while another officer was sent from the station and came across the allegedly stolen car at a set of lights leaving the Plaza, after being alerted to the alleged incident.

On February 5, another man was rushed to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition after he was attacked at the shopping centre.

He was later transferred to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and has since been discharged.
