A man and woman who claimed “sovereign citizenship” rights were arrested at a Sunshine Coast shopping centre for allegedly refusing to comply with Covid-19 requirements.

Some QLD restrictions could remain until Christmas

Two people were arrested at a Sunshine Coast shopping centre for allegedly refusing to adhere to Covid-19 requirements due to their “sovereign citizenship” rights.

Police allege the man and woman refused to use the check-in app and refused to wear masks at the Noosa Civic shopping centre on Friday.

District Superintendent Craig Hawkins said the pair refused to comply with Covid-19 requirements as they claimed “sovereign citizenship”.

The accused allegedly breached the requirements while the region was in an eight-day lockdown, which has since lifted.

He said the man and woman allegedly obstructed police after they were issued infringement notices.

He said they were arrested and released on bail with a notice to appear in court.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said that type of behaviour would not be tolerated.

Noosa Civic centre management have been approached for comment.

Supt Hawkins praised Sunshine Coast residents for their overall compliance with Covid-19 directions over the weekend.

He said the cooperation with authorities helped lift the lockdown at 4pm on Sunday.

“Clearly the cooperation we generally got has been a massive influence behind the lockdown being able to be lifted,” Supt Hawkins said.

“I am very grateful to the people of the Sunshine Coast.

“Police will still be out this week to maintain the mask mandate and with a focus of preventing us going back into lockdown.”

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said several fines were handed out on the Sunshine Coast at the weekend for Covid-19 breaches.

Police issued seven infringement notices for breaching public health directions ($1378) and one for failing to comply with public health directions relating to mask wearing ($206) in the Sunshine Coast District on Saturday.

The spokesman said one of those was a Landsborough woman who was fined $1378 for non-essential travel when she was picked up at a static RBT at Glenview.
