A Sippy Downs woman is on the precipice of a term in actual custody after a series of drunken outbursts and a bizarre incident where she physically picked up three children in front of their horrified parent.
Chloe Abdesselem was on parole for violent crimes on the Sunshine Coast when the 28-year-old continued to attract the attention of police in late 2024 and early 2025.
Maroochydore Magistrates Court was told last week of how Abdesselem’s newest spree began at the Kawana Waters Hotel on October 30 at Buddina.
The incident involved the 28-year-old accusing a random punter of kidnapping his own daughter before she threw a chair at another patron after yelling and swearing.
“A manager had to call 000, she was then exposing her breasts, swearing, removing clothing when police arrived,” police prosecutor Jeanette Grigoris said.
Three further “concerning” incidents took place on December 3 last year at the Maroochydore TimeZone, which involved the 28-year-old physically lifting up three young children in front of their horrified mother. The court was told Abdesselem tried to walk away with the third after picking them up.
Sergeant Grigoris said the children’s parent intervened.
She said these three incidents lacked violence but no doubt were “frightening” for the children’s parents, who in a victim impact statement tendered to the court said they continued to feel paranoid, fearful and hyper-vigilant in public places.
The court was told Abdesselem caused a public nuisance at the Wurtulla IGA and also launched a laptop at a car’s windscreen.
She was charged with three counts of common assault, three of public nuisance and one of wilful damage and obstructing police.
She pleaded guilty in court on Friday last week.
Sergeant Grigoris said the 28-year-old had an extensive criminal history, which included an appearance last year in court where she was given a nine-month jail sentence with immediate parole.
This sentence was for assaults against a shopping centre cleaner and security guard partnered with violent public incidents at El Camino restaurant and the Duporth Tavern.
The police prosecutor told the court Abdesselem continued to be violent, intoxicated and disorderly in public places and asked for jail.
Defence solicitor Patrick Meehan said Abdesselem had a prejudicial upbringing that led to alcohol problems.
Mr Meehan said the Sippy Downs woman grappled with the addiction and other mental health issues.
He said this alcohol use disorder “can’t be fixed overnight”.
Since being charged for her latest offences, he said the 28-year-old took comprehensive steps to rehabilitate herself.
He also claimed during the common assaults on the young children, Abdesselem was on medication and said CCTV footage depicted the 28-year-old’s behaviour as “slow” and “not quite present” in what he also deemed a “confusing interaction”.
Magistrate Raelene Ellis reserved her decision as she was “struggling” with the idea of giving Abdesselem a sentence that was not imprisonment.
“I don’t think that something along the lines of probation is going to come close to cutting the mustard,” Ms Ellis said.
Her matters were adjourned to August 7.
