Queensland Police issue fines for Covid-19 breaches

Sunshine Coast police officers continued their strict procedures after eight people were fined for breaching Covid-19 lockdown restrictions on Saturday.

A Queensland Police spokesman said that police issued seven infringement notices for breaching public health directions ($1378) and one for failing to comply with public health directions relating to mask wearing ($206) in the Sunshine Coast District on Saturday.

“Three of the seven infringements were issued following a vehicle intercept in Tewantin and the remaining four were issued following a separate vehicle intercept in Mooloolaba,” he said.

“The infringement relating to mask wearing was issued to a 39-year-old man at Caloundra.”

The news comes after two people at Noosaville were arrested on Friday for alleged breaches to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said police arrested four people on Friday including the two at Noosaville.

“We had two persons at Noosaville who not only refused to check in with the check-in app, then refused to wear masks and then decided to have an argument with police,” he said.

Superintendent Hawkins said the message was clear, stay at home.

“Mounted units will be here supporting officers along the beaches and intercepting people,” Superintendent Hawkins said.

“The pop-up sites will be in place for the duration of the lockdown and we hope to see co-operation until the end of it.

“Police will be out to ensure people are doing the right thing.”

As of Friday police had issued more than $10,000 in fines since the start of the lockdown on the Sunshine Coast.
