Brock Lewis evaded police on Landsborough Highway

A 32-year-old Mount Mellum man reached speeds of 177km/h along a Central Queensland highway in his Holden Commodore while he was evading police detection. HERE’S WHAT HE TOLD POLICE:

A 32-year-old Mount Mellum man reached speeds of up to 177km/h as police gave chase to him in a rural highway in Central Queensland.

Brock Lewis had been travelling along the Landsborough Hwy in Tambo on March 27, 2021 when he passed a police car driving in the opposite direction.

Caloundra Magistrates Court heard police performed a U-turn to follow Lewis.

Police prosecutor Stephen Potter said after activating their lights Lewis increased his speed with officers observing the 32-year-old travelling at 177km/h on their speed radar.

Sergeant Potter said police lost sight of the vehicle as they travelled into Tambo and patrolled the streets to find his Holden Commodore.

The court heard he was eventually found between Tambo and Augathella where he denied evading police saying he assumed the cops had flashed their lights at him to slow down.

He told police he didn’t see them behind him.

Sergeant Potter said Lewis was on parole for serious offending.

Defence solicitor Belinda Robinson told the court the Mount Mellum man had been visiting friends in Winton and was fatigued from driving such a long distance.

He later admitted it was a regrettable decision and panicked after he evaded police interception.

Lewis pleaded guilty to disobeying the speed limit and evading police and was fined $7692.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years with convictions recorded.
