A Bli Bli dad who allegedly broke the wrist of his mother has told a court he had been reeling from the tragic death of his wife only two days earlier.

Adam Frank Bryant had been grappling with the loss of his wife when he had driven over to his mother’s home to see his children on December 4.

Police allege when the 35-year-old arrived an argument ensued after the mother took Bryant’s keys.

It’s further alleged when Mr Bryant tried to retrieve the keys he had grabbed the victim and shoved her, prompting her to fall violently backwards to the ground where she fractured her wrist.

Police prosecutor Mick Ruddiman told Maroochydore Magistrates Court the mother had been released from hospital but required further surgery for the injury.

Mr Bryant was arrested by police and remanded in custody, applying for bail in Maroochydore Magistrates Court from the dock.

Duty lawyer David Crews said the alleged grievous bodily harm had transpired after a tragic set of circumstances.

The court was told Mr Bryant’s wife had died two days before the alleged offence, leaving him to father their two children alone.

Mr Crews said Bryant’s mother, the children’s grandmother, had taken them after their mother’s death which set the context of what happened.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said based on the information put before the court, it was unclear whether the children were taken into the grandmother’s care by consent.

Mr McLaughlin said the bottom line was Mr Bryant was lawfully entitled to have the children in his custody.

He said on the facts presented there was no suggestion he wanted to allegedly “seriously injure” the woman and it wasn’t a “vicious attack”.

Mr Bryant was granted bail and had his matter adjourned to February 3, 2023 where he faces a charge of grievous bodily harm (domestic violence offence).

He was led outside the courthouse in handcuffs to the watch house next door.
