A Maroochydore man has been told his theft of a woman’s phone after she died by suicide at a Logan train station was “despicable”.

Anthony John Doyle was captured on CCTV stealing the woman’s device on the platform after her tragic death at Woodridge Train Station on November 10 last year.

Magistrate Rod Madsen told the 36-year-old it was a “disgusting” thing to do after the woman placed her phone down and died shortly after.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard this theft was only one of 10 charges which he pleaded guilty to in court on Wednesday, which included entering a premises to commit an indictable offence, possessing dangerous drugs, obstructing police and stealing by looting where there’s death or incapacity.

Police prosecutor Bec Lambert said Doyle’s theft involved the 36-year-old stealing the woman’s phone after she died by suicide at the train station. The phone was never recovered.

Sergeant Lambert said because of this, the woman’s family were not be able access items that may have been on her phone.

The court heard Doyle was also involved in a break in where he tried to steal several e-bikes after he accessed an area through a roller door.

He was stopped by witnesses and the bikes were recovered.

Sergeant Lambert called them opportunistic stealing offences which involved taking items to convert to cash.

The Maroochydore man, who was on court-ordered, community-based orders at the time, also admitted to possessing meth, a knife, and graffitiing a train seat and fleeing from police.

Defence lawyer Rod Morgan said Doyle’s crimes could be boiled down to a meth addiction he struggled with. He relapsed after grappling with personal tragedies, the court heard.

Mr Morgan said the 36-year-old’s partner was sick, and he hoped to look after her once he was released from jail, where he has been since February 23 when he was taken into custody.

He spent 46 days in prison before his sentence hearing this week.

The solicitor said Doyle also wanted to move away from Logan to get away from the drug scene, and had made progress in recent times.

Mr Madsen remonstrated with the 36-year-old about his shameful theft of the dead woman’s phone, however Doyle, who appeared by video from jail, claimed he did not know the woman jumped onto the tracks when he took the phone.

The magistrate then read aloud the facts to the court, which stated police analysed security footage from Woodridge Train Station which showed Doyle with a woman on the platform close to the victim when she placed her phone on the platform and died by suicide.

Mr Madsen said the pair saw the phone, with Doyle placing it into his pocket before the left.

Doyle was jailed for 18 months, with a parole release date set for August 22.

He must also perform 40 hours’ community service and was fined $400.
