An engineer must pay back a Buderim pub more than $1500 after smashing a gaming machine’s buttons so hard they cracked.
Bradley Robert Mundt was told to leave the Creek Tavern late on January 31 after he caused $1590.38 in damages to a pokies machine after a joke went wrong.
Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday how the Mountain Creek man was speaking to another punter on one of the gaming machines about 11.10pm.
Police prosecutor Mark Burrell said when the patron collected his funds out of the machine, Mundt smashed the button panel until it cracked and broke.
Sergeant Burrell said pub staff caught wind of what happened and took the 39-year-old’s photo before they asked him to leave.
He was asked to attend the Maroochydore Police Station on February 18 and told officers in an interview he was there at the pub but had no memory of breaking the buttons.
Mundt was charged with wilful damage, which he pleaded guilty to in court this week.
Duty solicitor Jamiee Burns said the 39-year-old engineer and father was drinking that night but was instructed he hit the machine in what he thought was a “joking way” with force as the punter there had won.
Ms Burns said Mundt hit the buttons for a joke on trying to “get the same outcome”. She said he was remorseful.
Magistrate Chris Callaghan looked at the 39-year-old’s history, and said Mundt had a problem going out when he was drinking.
Mr Callaghan referenced parts of the Mountain Creek man’s history which included other offences of public nuisance, wilful damage and assault police.
He asked the father to do something about his alcohol intake.
Mundt was fined $800 and ordered to pay back the damages for the pokies machine.
No conviction was recorded.
