A civilian watch-house officer has admitted to stealing boxer shorts from the Sunshine Plaza.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan said it would have been a “mortifying experience” for Georgia Hope Moyle to tell her police supervisor of her impending court appearance for taking underwear from Myers Maroochydore on February 27.

Police prosecutor Mark Burrell told Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Wednesday the 32-year-old entered the clothing store about 11.20am and walked to the men’s underwear section.

Sergeant Burrell said Moyle took two pairs of Mitch Dowd satin boxer shorts, worth $19.95 each, from the rack and removed the price tags.

The court heard she concealed the items in her handbag and left the store without paying.

Her shoplifting was reported to police with officers observing security footage which depicted her leaving the shopping centre in her car.

She was interviewed by police on March 14 however declined to answer questions.

Moyle was given a notice to appear for unauthorised dealing with shop goods, which she pleaded guilty to in court on Wednesday.

Defence solicitor Paula Price said Moyle worked as a civilian watch-house officer with the Queensland Police Service after moving north in 2023. She previously worked as a correctional officer at the Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney for seven years.

Ms Price said the 32-year-old mother began to struggle in her personal life in recent times following a family tragedy and the breakdown of her marriage.

The solicitor submitted this partnered with financial pressures led to the “impulsive action” of taking the boxers as her “son needed underwear”.

After she was given a notice to appear, Moyle was required to tell her supervisor and will now be subject to a police disciplinary process.

Ms Price said the police staff member was remorseful and had no criminal history. She also tendered a character reference from a serving local police officer which spoke of Moyle’s good character.

Mr Callaghan accepted this offence was out of character and placed Moyle on an eight-month good behaviour bond. No conviction was recorded.

She must also pay back the $39.90 in restitution.
