The memorial of one of the women who died in a car crash after a tree fell in the Glasshouse Mountains has been organised.

Joy Charlton, 80, was travelling with Jasmyne Lloyd, 20, on Old Gympie Rd last Saturday when a tree fell on their Volkswagen.

The women died at the scene.

On Monday, Joy’s only child, Tennille, said her mum’s memorial would be held at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom at Beerwah.

It is scheduled for January 14 at 10.30am.

Tennille said her mum was “exactly what her name says” and was always making people laugh by telling jokes.

“We’ve had so many people ringing and telling me stories of how she’s looked after them and took them under her wing,” Tennille said.

“She was always there for me, whenever I needed her.”

Joy was born in Melbourne in 1942 and moved to Queensland in 1965.

She was married to Darryl Charlton for 50 years and the couple lived in Ipswich and Kenmore before moving to the Glasshouse Mountains about seven years ago.

Darryl died two years ago and Tennille’s fondest memory of her mum also involved her dad.

She said the couple had a long-running joke for when someone asked how long they were married.

“One of them would get in first, usually Mum, and they would say ‘50 years ago, but if it was tomorrow I’d call the whole thing off’,” Tennille said.

The 44-year-old said her dad “adored” her mum and they never fought.

“Dad was always the joker, since he’s passed Mum always tried to live up to the joke-telling but she often got it wrong,” Tennille said.

“She was Joy by name and joy by nature.

“She was up for anything.”

Tennille said her mum loved AFL, was a St Kilda supporter and would often passionately “yell” at the television during games.

The daughter said, as her voice cracked with emotion, that she was moving from Mudjimba to her mother’s Glasshouse Mountains home to care for her before the tragedy occurred and she would remain in her mum’s home.

Tennille said her mum was an active Jehovah’s Witness and she and Jasmyne were out “witnessing” when the incident happened.

Joy would regularly meet fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses for morning teas, dinners and regular card games.

Tennille said she felt “unbelievable shock” when police officers told her of the crash.

“One tenth of a second and it would have missed them,” she said.

“Isn’t there supposed to be people that’s job is supposed to be to cut them down?

“I don’t want to blame anyone or make it anyone’s problem but it’s so tragic and it could have been stopped.

“It’s so close to the road.”

Joy’s funeral will be held at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Beerwah with further details of the service to be confirmed.
