A 20-year-old Little Mountain woman killed when a tree fell on her car at the Glasshouse Mountains on New Year’s Eve has been identified.
Jasmyne Lloyd and her elderly passenger, an 80-year-old Glasshouse Mountains woman yet to be identified, were killed when a tree fell on their car while they were travelling south along Old Gympie Rd, Glasshouse Mountains at 12.20pm Saturday.
The car, a Volkswagen, is understood to have lost control and came to a stop in bushland after the tree fell.
Both women died at the scene.
The roof of the small sedan appeared severely caved in, and was pulled off the car by crews for police to investigate inside the vehicle. Crews extracted the occupants and handed the scene over to police about 1.55pm.
The tragedy sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, including from Mrs Lloyd’s devastated husband, Dylan Lloyd.
“No words can describe my heartbreak,” he said.
The couple had been married for three months and 29 days, Mr Lloyd said.
The Sunshine Coast Daily has reached out to Mr Lloyd for further comment.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the tree had been in poor condition, potentially rotting.
He described the incident as “incredibly rare” and that the people involved had been in the “wrong place, at the wrong time”.
“It’s incredibly unfortunate. The tree collapsed as they had been driving by,” the officer said.
Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream said police were unable to determine if rot or if “some sort of animal intervention” was involved with the tree falling.
“But the tree, and a large section of that tree, broke away,” he said.
“Unfortunately as that vehicle was passing under - a couple of seconds either way the vehicle would have been clear - it struck the vehicle and then the vehicle exited the road.”
