Tahnee-Lea Holt’s seamless transition to fullback was one of the highlights of the CQ Capras’ first-round defeat in the BMD Premiership.
The home side fought hard but was overpowered 38-8 by an imposing Ipswich Jets outfit at Rockhampton’s Rugby Park on Saturday.
There was no joy either for the club’s men, who were on the receiving end of a 56-12 thumping at the hands of Redcliffe Dolphins.
The Jets are new to BMD this season and made a big impression in their first appearance, with winger Nikki Cox bagging three of her team’s eight tries.
Capras’ coach Julyess Jarvis said it was a physical test for his new-look side and a tough initiation for the eight debutants.
“We spoke about what the Jets would bring - a big forward pack - and how we would have to be going into the game with a defensive mindset,” he said.

“Unfortunately, despite starting okay, we were always on the back foot.
“Something we’ll have to work on going forward is starting a bit faster because I don’t think the teams will get any smaller.”
Jarvis sung the praises of Holt who in her third season with the team, made the move from centre to fullback.
She also scored the team’s only points, crossing for two well-deserved second-half tries.
“Tahnee’s never played at fullback before but she definitely had one of the best games I’ve seen her play so hats off to her,” he said.
Jarvis also acknowledged debutant Josie Wogand, who helped provide some spark off the bench at dummy half and never shied away from the defensive challenge.

The Capras started the second half strongly and managed to mount some attacking pressure but they could not contain the constant barrage from a bigger pack which really laid the foundation for the visitors’ win.
Jarvis said while his team had plenty to work on, there were some positive takeaways.
“I thought at times we scrambled really well and that’s something we’ve talked about at training and been working on in the off-season,” he said.
“We started the second half well and showed that if we can hold the ball and complete our sets, we can use our speed to dent the line a little bit.
“Our shape also looked quite good at times.
“There were some good things but there are others that we need to sharpen up before Round 2.”
The Capras are at home again for that clash on Saturday against the Norths Devils, who registered a 24-14 win over the Sunshine Coast Falcons in Round 1.
