A blockbuster battle of the middles looms in the Dolphins Cup grand final rematch between reigning champions St Brendan’s and Rockhampton Grammar.
The teams will face off at 5pm on Tuesday in Round 3 of the elite schoolboys rugby league competition.
The schools will also meet in the Dolphins Challenge, while the Grammar girls will take on North Rockhampton High in the NRL Schoolgirls Cup.

Brendan’s and Grammar come into the highly anticipated Cup clash having won their opening games of the competition.
Grammar co-coach Nathan Doyle said he wanted to see a repeat of the stoic defence his side showed in its 16-4 win over Emmaus in its season opener.
“Emmaus are a pretty good attacking side so to only let in four points showed the boys’ willingness to dig deep for one another,” he said.
“We’ve been working a lot on our defence so hopefully it holds up against St Brendan’s.
“They’re probably going to try to come through our middle, that’s how they did it last year.
“They play that power game with their forwards and they’ve got plenty of strike out wide.
“If we can hold the middle, we’re half a chance.”
Defence has also been an aspect of St Brendan’s game that has impressed coach Scott Minto.
“We know Grammar will put it on us early and try to put us off our game but we’ll be well prepared for an early onslaught,” Minto said.
“Defensively, there’s some good habits getting built around what we do and I think that’s one thing that will hold us in good stead for the whole season.
“If we defend really well as a team, we’ll compete with anyone we play.
“The key for us is to try to keep working at small things that we’re getting better at.”
THREE KEY MATCH-UPS
CENTRES: AJ GILBERT v LEO FANUATANU
Gilbert will be keen to see more time this round after leaving the field early in St Brendan’s Round 1 win against Shalom. He will be up against a familiar foe in Leo Fanuatanu, the two previously locking horns in the Central Highlands competition. Gilbert’s defence is strong so this will be a ding-dong battle with Fanuatanu, who is carrying the ball as well as anyone at the moment.
PROPS: TRAE COMMONS v XAVIER KNOT
Commons comes off a big year in 2024 for the victorious Year 10 St Brendan’s team. Big, mobile and aggressive, he will be looking to take the game to the Grammar pack. His opposite, Knot, will be keen to continue his good form too after a winning start against Emmaus last week. He was strong through the middle and made his mark with some bruising runs and hard-hitting defence.
SECOND ROWERS: JAKE MURPHY v GUOMOY MURPHY
Jake will be eager to keep his good form going against a newcomer to this year’s Open Dolphins Cup competition in Guomoy. Both share the same last name and from all indications, play the game with the same aggressive style to boot. Look to these two to try to spark their teams with hard runs and pressure on the halves in defence. Jake will lead St Brendan’s onto familiar turf in this one and will no doubt lead by example.
