Rockhampton Grammar will bring class on the edges and muscle through the middle when they launch their Dolphins Cup campaign.
After a first-round bye, the team is ready to hit the ground running as it looks to go one better than last year in the elite schoolboys rugby league competition.
Grammar will tackle Emmaus College on Tuesday, June 10, as part of a massive triple header of schools league action which features the same schools battling it out in the Dolphins Challenge (Year 10) and NRL Schoolgirls Cup.
You can catch all the action, with all the games being exclusively live streamed on Kommunity TV.
Rockhampton Grammar co-coach Grant Broadhurst said his players were keen and “ready to rip in”.
“The boys are jumping out of their skin to play,” he said.
“At this stage, we can only worry about ourselves.
“Defence is going to be a big focus for us. If we work hard for each other, the rest will take care of itself.”
Broadhurst said the dynamic centre pairing of Leo Fanuatanu and Cormack Werner, who have both been snapped up by NRL clubs, would be instrumental to Grammar’s campaign.
Queensland Country under-17 rep Fanuatanu is a powerful ball runner who is aggressive in defence, while Werner can produce some bone-jarring hits and has an uncanny ability to break tackles.
“They give us great strength on our edges but I’m really keen to see how our forwards stand up,” Broadhurst said.
“Xavier Nott and Luke Frame will be the ones to lead us in the middle.”
Broadhurst said Grammar would need to contain Emmaus’s lethal attacking combination of Will McLaughlin, Harri Meilland and Lathan McMeeken, who were on fire in their tough opening round loss to The Cathedral College.
Despite his team going down 20-14, Emmaus coach Mitchel Smith was happy with what his players produced - and wants to see more of the same moving forward.
He praised the effort, resilience and toughness of his players and their willingness to keep showing up for each other.
“Inside our camp we do know we’ve got a pretty good football side and we’re a lot further ahead than we were at this time last year,” Smith said.
“We had our chances against TCC but we’ve just got to nail the big moments.
“If we play the same way, in the same style and with the same aggression, it will go a long way towards us getting the win against Grammar.”
Smith said he would be looking for another big performance from his inspirational lock Jack O’Neill and prop Jacob Murphy, who played big minutes against TCC.
“If those two can lead our forwards and get us going forward and doing all the tough stuff, it gives Lathan, Harri and Will the chance to do what they do best,” he said.
