Two of Central Queensland’s most electrifying young talents will hold the key to a blockbuster Dolphins Cup season opener.
Bundaberg nursery Shalom College will be determined to make an early statement in the competition as they host reigning champions St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon.
The opening round blockbuster will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a massive triple header including the Dolphins Challenge (Year 10) and NRL Schoolgirls Cup clashes on Tuesday, June 3.
The Schoolgirls Cup clash will feature the competition debut of North Rockhampton High, while will clash with hosts and Central Queensland heavyweights Shalom.
All games from the NRL Schoolboys and Schoolgirls Cup Queensland competitions will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV through all News Corp Australia digital mastheads.
When it comes to the Dolphins Cup clash, it will be two dynamic ball-runners who hold all the cards.
Shalom coach Antonio Kaufusi knows if exciting fullback Parkka Perrotta-Dowling is firing early on, it will set the tone for his team.
Equally, St Brendan’s will look to their exciting custodian Kobe Oberhardt to create plenty of attacking opportunities.
This is the first time Shalom has played its opening game at home, something Kaufusi hopes will work in their favour.
“We’re pretty excited about that but we know the quality they have at St Brendan’s and that we’re up for a massive challenge,” he said.
“We’ve been working pretty hard and for me, it’s not so much about the result but rather how we go about things.
“I’ll be looking for the boys to put into practice what we’ve been focusing on - keeping it simple, our effort areas and competing for longer periods.
“If we can do those things and build on them, I’ll be pretty happy.”
St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto is seeing improvement week on week in his playing group but knows there can be no complacency.
“Shalom have been building over the past couple of years under Antonio Kaufusi and are now the powerhouse of Bundaberg rugby league,” he said.
“We are under no illusion that they will be one of the teams to beat this year.
“Our focus will be drumming the important on-field principals into our boys, particularly the younger players coming into the Firsts in these opening rounds, in a bid to create some consistency in our game model.”
Both coaches believe they have greater balance and depth in all positions this season.
Kaufusi wants his hard-working outfit playing finals, and said to not set that goal would be doing his team a disservice.
“I want to make sure the boys believe in that and we want to make sure we show that in our performances,” he said.
St Brendan’s is eyeing a third Cup title and Minto is confident he has the personnel to do it.
“If they can get to the level I think they’re capable of, they’re going to be a really good side.”
