Ky Hull is enjoying a purple patch and has been bang on with the boot, emerging as BITS Saints’ leading goal-kicker for the second week in a row.
The towering full forward landed six majors in the team’s 112-point drubbing of Glenmore in Round 8 of the AFL Capricornia senior men’s competition on Saturday.
He also kicked four goals the previous week as BITS broke the 26-game winning streak of reigning champions Yeppoon with an 11-point victory highlighted by a guest appearance from AFL great Dane Swan.
BITS most recent win moved them into second outright and Hull’s brilliance rocketed him into third on the leading goal-kickers ladder (see list below).
Yeppoon duo Joshua McKee and Chase Smaluch sit first and second in the standings with 33 and 21 goals respectively, each adding two more to their bounties in the Swans’ 46-point win over Rockhampton Panthers at the weekend.
BITS coach Cameron Lockett said Hull had come on in leaps and bounds this season.
“Ky’s been extremely strong for us,” he said.
“He’s a tall, rangy fella who’s been taking some really good marks.
“He’s got a booming kick and has been kicking a lot of goals from outside the 50 and that’s huge when you have someone who can kick so well from so far out.”
Lockett joined BITS at the start of 2024, and has been keen to foster the development of the club’s up-and-coming talent.
“We’ve had 17 debutants this year,” he said.
“We’re giving the young blokes an opportunity as we keep one eye on the future of the club.
“Our focus is to get as much game time into them as we can and we’re getting great value out of them.”
Lockett has been impressed by the teen trio of midfielder Will Raffin and Gold Coast Suns Academy members Sam Spearing and Bryce Schellebeck who were really holding their own against far more seasoned opposition.
Lockett said he threw a “big pre-season” at the players, with 15 sessions before Christmas.
“There’s been a big buy-in by them and now we’re seeing the benefits coming through,” he said.
“The boys are doing a really good job, they’re training hard and we’ve got a good rotation of players.
“We’re into outright second now and we just want to keep pushing.”
It was a winning day for BITS, whose teams scored a clean sweep in every division.
