A former miner’s cottage believed to have been moved from Mount Morgan to Emu Park in the early 1900s and once the home of the town’s matron and a place of worship is on the market for the first time in 30 years.

Many cottages were removed from Mount Morgan and relocated around the area in the early 1900s, when rail connected Rockhampton and Emu Park.

Zebulon at 24 Archer Street originally had a four-room configuration, exposed stud walls, corrugated roof, front and rear verandas and metal window hoods and a tub in the backyard for a bathroom, making it highly likely it was a former Mount Morgan cottage.

In the early days, Zebulon was neighboured by a butcher and later on a billiard hall in 1916 which is now the Uniting Church.

At the time, Emu Park had three hotels, an aerated water factory, canning company and a racecourse.

In the 1960s, it was the home of matron Emma Sybil MacLeod before the town had a doctor’s surgery and she would treat residents with medical ailments and assist in births.

It was reported that the Emu Park community purchased electrical equipment for Matron MacLeod in appreciation of her services when the area got mains electricity.

When the current owners, David and Joanna Scott from Monto, renovated the home after they purchased it in 1993, a tin crucifix was revealed nailed to the wall behind some shower panels.

The main bedroom is believed to have been a place of worship for some families who worshipped in homes rather than churches.

The name Zebulon comes from the Bible scripture Genesis 49:13, “Zebulon shall dwell at the shore of the sea. He shall become a haven for ships.”

Long-time Emu Park hairdresser Carolyn Gill purchased the home in 1979 before she sold it to the Scotts in 1993.

The Scotts also purchased an “abandoned derelict bush homestead” for $1,000, using tongue and groove timber from to renovate the Emu Park home.

The homestead was turned into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with living areas and undercover outdoor entertaining areas, but its iconic large Moreton Bay figs remain.

It was advertised on Airbnb and marketed as a longer term stay.

The home is for sale through Kev Doolan of Professionals Emu Park Real Estate.
