First look: Plans for cancer specialist Just Skin to open at Gympie

The transformation of one of Gympie’s commercial hubs into a health precinct is continuing, with plans unveiled to open a new medical clinic not far from a major shopping centre.

The transformation of the area surrounding Gympie Central shopping centre into a healthcare precinct continues with new plans revealed to open another medical clinic near the commercial centre.

There are four other health service buildings in the immediate vicinity of the block, the development application says.

These include a newly built centre next door to the land.

The proposed centre would include two tenants, of which one is proposed to be Just Skin which specialises non-invasive skin cancer treatments.

Twelve parking spots for patients would be included in the development.

Health has been identified as one of the region’s biggest growing industries moving forward, with National Institute of Economic Research data showing the number of health-related jobs in the region surging in the past few years.

Between 2018 and 2023 the number of workers employed across Gympie’s health services increased more than 37 per cent, from 2543 to 3495.

This included two consecutive years where employment numbers jumped more than 10 per cent.

The increase in health-related jobs coincides with expectations the region’s median age was expected to increase from 48.4 in 2023, to 54 in 2046.
