A man who caused an emergency situation to be declared after he refused to speak with police at his Granville home has faced court over the incident and for possessing illegal weapons.

Lock Desmond Richter, 60, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a weapon, possessing a restricted item and obstructing police when he faced the Maryborough Magistrates Court on Monday.

The court was told the charges related to an incident on August 14.

That included Richter being caught with a knife disguised as a credit card.

Police also found Richter in possession of a telescopic baton and a replica firearm, the court was told.

The court was told the obstruction charge related to an incident in which police had knocked on the front door in Granville and called his phone.

An emergency situation had to be declared and, after about an hour of attempting to engage with Richter, he exited the home and handed himself over to police.

The incident was described as being a “semi-siege situation”.

Defence lawyer Morgan Harris said he disagreed with the term “siege” as his client was not armed or threatening police with a weapon at the time.

“Siege generally has violent or threatening connotations,” he said.

Mr Harris said the weapons Richter was found in possession with were largely gift or novelty-type items.

He said Richter had recently taken over his brother’s lease in public housing after his brother died from brain cancer and he had known of the items at the unit.

Magistrate John Milburn said the events on August 14 involving holding police at bay were “prolonged” and had gone on for about an hour.

“You possessed some items that were illegal,” he said.

“One was a credit card knife. Another a telescopic baton. Another was a replica firearm that was quite realistic, I understand.”

Richter also had a concerning criminal history, Mr Milburn said.

Richter was fined $1650 for the offences and convictions were recorded.
