Elderly man dies after being beaten with walking stick at Hervey Bay Hospital
A major investigation is underway after a man in his 80s was allegedly attacked by another patient in a hospital ward, dying two days later.

Police are investigating a violent assault involving a walking stick on an elderly man, who died two days later.
This publication can reveal the shock incident happened at Hervey Bay Hospital last month, with police saying the alleged attacker was aged in his 70s.
Police are investigating witness reports that the man who carried out the attack was an elderly dementia patient at the hospital.
The victim is believed to have been assaulted while he was asleep in bed while staying in a ward of the hospital.
“Initial investigations indicate a man allegedly assaulted an 84-year-old Torquay man with a walking stick on March 24,” a police spokesman said.
The Torquay man later died on March 26.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances around the incident, and no charges have been laid.
On Friday afternoon, Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service provided a response.
“Our thoughts go out to the family members and staff impacted by this incident,” a spokeswoman said.
“We are unable to provide any comment in relation to a case under police or coroner’s investigation.
“Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service has a zero-tolerance policy to violence in the workplace.
“The family has requested privacy at this time.”
