Maryborough’s first Guzman y Gomez Mexican restaurant opened its doors this week and the crowds could not get enough.

Offering $5 burritos and bowls and with a live mariachi band on hand to celebrate, the big crowd ensured the grand opening was a success on Tuesday.

The Maryborough business is franchisee Wade James’ fifth restaurant as he also runs GYG outlets in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg.

“We can’t wait to open the GYG Maryborough drive thru and serve up GYG’s fresh fast food conveniently to the locals here.

“GYG Maryborough features a dual lane drive thru giving the local community more convenience of getting GYG’s 100 per cent clean and freshly prepared menu the way they want whether pick-up, drive thru or dine in,” he said.

“We’ve already hired over 50 locals to join the team at GYG Maryborough and are still looking for more people to join our team.

“If you’re looking for a great place to work with amazing vibes and long-term career opportunities, I encourage you to apply today.”

It is the second Guzman y Gomez to open its doors on the Fraser Coast.

In 2021, the franchise opened at Hervey Bay and its popularity was clear,

GYG spokesman Steven Marks said Hervey Bay had been key in the company’s real estate expansion due to huge local demand.

“We have had customers telling us today they have driven as far as Bundaberg and Maroochydore to get GYG each week,” Mr Marks said at the time.

“We’re in awe of Hervey Bay’s commitment to our food.

“We have had cars lined up on the main road but we’re moving fast and our drive thrus are made for this type of opening.

“We want to thank the local community as well as a number of local businesses who have supported the opening, it’s been a huge community effort.”

Building began on the Maryborough restaurant in August, 2022.

It joins several other new businesses to recently open in Maryborough, including 7-Eleven, Forty Winks and Zarraffas Coffee.
