Swell Cafe
Contemporary
This is an unpretentious corner in increasingly cool beachy Avalon that has a bit of fun with healthy lentil-packed salads and a brilliant feed-me-now Reuben sandwich with house-made caramelised cabbage and corned beef oozing Swiss cheese and mustard on sticky toasted rye. With kettle chips on the side, no less. The barista knows locals by name, and pulls their preferred coffee without an order being spoken. The Allpress coffee ($3.50) is gorgeous and smooth, strong enough for a caffeine hit before checking out the swell. Need To Know: on Fridays, there are scones with cream and jam.
