Contemporary

You probably know their bread already, from your shopping forays at David Jones, Thomas Dux or About Life. But there's more to Sydney's oldest sourdough bakery than Irish soda and sour cherry sourdough. There are fat sandwiches and pepper steak pies, house-made jams, juices and colourful gelati, enticing lamington friands, a huge wedge of apple pie that's almost a destination in itself, and a clutch of no-nonsense cafe tables amid the pay-and-order briskness. There's also Bowan Island blend coffee, turned into a hot, quite astringent piccolo ($3.50) by the busy team of baristas. Also in Chatswood and at the Five Dock Leisure Centre.
