Battambang
Asian$$
Located on the sleepy eastern side of town, Battambang offers something a little different from the bustling eateries on the well-worn Cabramatta food trail: authentic Cambodian fare (mild in terms of chilli-spiciness and so relatively accessible). There's nothing glamorous about the red plastic seats and walls that could do with a fresh lick of paint, but the food makes up for it. Top choice is Phnom Penh noodle soup - a mean rendition of the clear soup with rice noodles, minced pork and seafood. Or try beef sour soup with morning glory, lemongrass and offal, or the lemongrass beef stir-fry: two uniquely Cambodian dishes.
