The Epicurean Centre
14.5/20

Buildings dot the tree-shaded grounds of this sprawling vineyard, including the old barn (the original 19th-century winery) and the modern Epicurean Centre with its indoor-outdoor restaurant. Each dish is matched to a Brown Brothers wine (included in the price), and on-trend food favours local ingredients. A multicoloured heirloom tomato salad with confit tomato and tomato jelly, goat's cheese and toasted brioche makes a good marriage with an estate pinot grigio. The wonderful Patricia chardonnay, named to honour the family's matriarch, accompanies chickpea gnocchi with mushrooms, zucchini and pinenut crumble, a dish as satisfyingly complex as the wine. And lamb loin may be teamed with an earthy tempranillo. There are appetisers as well, including locally made charcuterie and Milawa cheeses, and inventive desserts, like a chocolate fondant pudding, the accompanying icecream studded with toasted marshmallow. The menu changes seasonally, and the wines with it. All up, an impressive package, offering everything an epicurean could want: great setting, service, food and wine.
