Jamie Oliver “hoovered” up this lasagne during his Australian visit. Now Sydneysiders get a chance to try it.

Melbourne’s first hatted lasagne restaurant, 1800 Lasagne, is coming to Sydney for a one-night residency at QT restaurant Gowings on June 19.

Haven’t heard of 1800 Lasagne before? Well, it’s “kind of a perfect restaurant”, according to The Age chief restaurant critic Besha Rodell. It was also celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s first stop during his Australian tour for MasterChef last year.

As the name suggests, lasagne is the main event. Rodell describes it as a “goddamn wonder”, with delicate pasta, fluffy bechamel, and a pork and beef sauce “as good as any [she’s] had anywhere”.

Sydneysiders will get their first taste of the signature dish this winter, when 1800 Lasagne head chef Joey Kellock teams up with Gowing’s head chef Sean Connolly to create a four-course feast for Good Food Events.

Connolly, a self-described “affable geezer” from Yorkshire, leads a culinary empire of hotel restaurants, stretching from Esther at QT Auckland to The Wild Flower Bar & Dining in the small town of Killcare, on the NSW Central Coast.

The veteran chef came on board at Gowings ahead of its relaunch in 2022, with a luxe New York steakhouse aesthetic.

At the pop-up, Connolly will create a series of sides to accompany an entree and the signature lasagne from Kellock. Dessert will follow.

The $149 ticket price includes free-flowing drinks, kicking off with Campari cocktails, before a wine pairing (or beer, if you prefer).

It’s the latest in a series of chef collaborations from Good Food Events. It follows a sold-out long table dinner with Melbourne food legend Guy Grossi and Lana head chef Alex Wong in Quay Quarter Lane in Sydney, and a collaborative dinner, also a sell-out, between Lee Ho Fook and Baba’s Place at QT Melbourne.

Before 1800 Lasagne drops into Sydney, Good Food Events will host a food court takeover on May 24 at Quay Quarter Tower during Vivid Sydney, with stallholders such as Christopher The (creator of the famous watermelon cake at Black Star Pastry) and Charlotte Ree, the author behind hit cookbook Heartbake.

Tickets for the 1800 Lasagne pop-up are available now at goodfoodevents.com.au.
