Sydney lockdown: 10 top restaurant takeaway options
Sure, we would rather be drinking martinis in bars and enjoying restaurant food at the source, but if lockdown has a silver lining it's the cracking selection of takeaway on offer while Sydney stays at home.
Here are 10 of our favourite options for your to-eat list.
Burgers from Bistrot 916
Sydney's hottest new bistro is keeping its takeaway simple with an American-style double-cheeseburger and beef fat potatoes for $25. Foie gras can be added for an extra $15 and 50 burgers will be available daily between 4pm and 9pm or until sold out (and they will sell out). Pick up only. Call 02 9167 6667 or order at the door.
22 Challis Avenue, Potts Point, bistrot916.com
Yabby jaffle from Hartsyard
This local favourite has turned up the luxury comfort dial with a wood-fired yabby and black truffle jaffle ($18). Consider it an entree before casarecce pasta with XO sauce and roasted prawn bisque. Pick up only between 6pm and 8pm daily. Call 02 8068 1473 or order through the Hartsyard website.
33 Enmore Road, Newtown, hartsyard.com.au
All the baked goods from Sixpenny
It's back. The general store that created morning queues during lockdown last year returns to Australia's smallest three-hatted restaurant for one weekend only. Arrive early for gold-standard cakes, slices, croissants, bread and other baked goods. Open 9am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday. Pre-orders for whole cakes only through the Sixpenny website.
83 Percival Road, Stanmore, sixpenny.com.au
Falafel pita from Kepos Street Kitchen
The Kepos deli fridge is chock-full of Mediterranean good times such as chermoula-marinated whole chicken, merguez snags and moussaka, while pita stuffed with falafel, hummus, pickled chilli and herbs ($14) is perfect for a post park-exercise lunch. Open 8am to 3pm daily or order through the Kepos website.
96 Kepos Street, Redfern, keposstreetkitchen.com.au
Live crab from Amah by Ho Jiak
Chef Loong Oon opened his 200-seat Malaysian eatery – a tribute to the homestyle cooking of his late grandmother – only three weeks ago. Fragrant fishball soup is the signature, but a lockdown menu also lists fresh mud crab from the tank ($118 a kilo) in a garlic butter sauce or black pepper curry. Open 11.30am to 8pm daily or order through the website.
The District, 436 Victoria Avenue Chatswood, hojiak.com.au/chatswood
Date night pack for two from The Old Fitzroy Hotel
Lockdown in style with chestnut soup, baked mussels, duck confit, beef Bourguignon, pommes Anna and sticky prune pudding. All yours for $162 including a bottle of Les Fruits wine. Chef Anna Ugarte-Carral is also rocking single-serve dishes such as gnocchi with cream of vegetable ragu that's like a warm winter hug. Order for pick-up and local delivery through the Old Fitz website.
129 Dowling Street, Woolloomooloo, fitzityourself.com
Lasagne from Busta
Layers of pasta, mince and bechamel is the feel-good hit of lockdown for a second year running, with top-notch lasagne available from Drake in Bondi and Glorietta, North Sydney. Busta provides a classic beef and pork version ($25) of the craft, plus $18 negroni double serves for cocktails on the couch. Order for pick-up and local delivery through the Busta website.
10 Pittwater Road, Manly, busta.com.au
A Syrian feast from Damascus Restaurant
Few things feed a family better than a table heaving with grilled skewers, barbecue lamb, fattoush and tabouli. Talal Almardoud can provide such a banquet for lockdown from his Syrian kitchen – just don't forget the garlic dip and extra bread. Open daily. Call 0499 455 761 to order or use the DoorDash app.
850 Hume Highway, Bass Hill
Sushi box from Kisuke
It's difficult to score a seat at Yusuke Morita's omakase restaurant at the best of times, which means orders for the chef's lockdown box are filling up fast. Expect 13 pieces of the best sushi sliced that day for $65. Sold out this weekend, but orders are open until July 9. Pick-up between 5pm and 6pm. Text 0476 294 682 to order.
50 Llankelly Place, Potts Point, kisukepottspoint.com
Yookgaejang from Sang by Mabasa
Sorry minestrone, there's a new winter soup in town. Sang's hearty yookgaejang special ($21) stars spicy slow-cooked beef, bean sprouts, black fungus and taro with a side of rice. The Korean restaurant is also on hand for kimchi pancakes, bibimbap and super crunchy fried chicken. Pre-order yookgaejang through the Sang website by noon for pick-up after 5pm.
98 Fitzroy Street, Surry Hills, sangbymabasa.com.au
