The Nightcliff Tigers showed their game control after charging to victory against a Tiwi Bombers outfit who struggled to get going at TIO Stadium
Both sides have their x-factor players, but it was Nightcliff who played the more effective footy on their way to winning 19.11 (125) to 7.12 (54).
Nightcliff took control early on off the back of new ruck Liam Buxton, and they had their reward not long after through excitement machine and former Bomber Tristan Singh-Lippo.
However, Tiwi, who are always up for a shootout, struck back almost immediately off some swift deliveries from Brendan Kantilla which allowed Kim Kantilla to charge through for a goal.
It was a chaotic beginning which set up a back and forth opening quarter, but ultimately it was the Tigers, with Brodie Filo putting in another big shift through the middle, who led at the first change.
Brett Kennedy was a constant threat in the forward line, and found more than one way to seal a goal, while Michael Mummery was also potent in the forward line.
A dominant six-goal second quarter allowed the Tigers to surge ahead as their efficient use of the footy exposed Tiwi’s shortcomings on defence.
And for Nightcliff as a whole it was another day where their entire unit chipped in, from back line captain Nathan Brown to their multitude of goal scorers further up.
Tiwi did have their moments early on, but were a little too inaccurate in front of goal to enforce any authority on the match when they needed to.
And all the while Nightcliff’s experienced campaigners who know how to tussle with Tiwi, as well as the heat, such as Cam Ilett, controlled the flow of the game.
The Bombers won the third quarter as Brayden Rioli and Stanley Tipiloura took the game on, while Michael Dunn was busy throughout.
But as in the second, Nightcliff surged again late in the piece with former AFL player John Butcher kicking two goals to move the game out of sight.
“Tiwi is always a tricky game and we have a lot of boys here who have never played them, so it’s a good learning curve for us as a team,” Brown said.
“We finally got going in the second quarter, they threw everything at us early and we had to work out how they play and how they move the footy.
“They changed in the back half coming through the middle, while they used their wings more in the first, so we had to keep changing the way we played because of them.
“With the bye next week we threw a lot more out there, the team left everything out there and I’m proud of the way they responded when times got hard.”
“It’s been a refreshing season at Tigers with a lot new faces, I’m 34 and towards the end of my career so it’s brought some extra excitement and a bit more life out of me with these new guys.”

Kim Kantilla will again be the one to watch having scored four goals last week, while Brendan Kantilla and Karlson Kantilla were also among the side’s best players.
Meanwhile, Nightcliff have proven in their two previous trips to TIO Stadium that they are also a side which knows how to score a goal.
Their efficiency getting the ball out of the midfield and towards goal has been second to none this season, and they will be a true test of the Bombers’ resolve.
Full replays of the match will be posted here following the game’s finish.
