Old Scotch and St Kevin’s games in the VAFA Premier Women’s competition are always important but there is a greater emphasis than ever this weekend.
The league powerhouses currently sit two and three on the ladder with Caulfield Grammarians leading the way unbeaten at 12-0.
In previous seasons, the pair have been first and second at this stage of a season but now four points is crucial in both sides chasing down a double chance.
The game is set to be live streamed on KommunityTV from 2pm, with the women’s reserves kicking off from 11.50am.
Old Scotch coach Dean Anderson is aware of what’s stake.
“It’s a strong rivalry now, we’ve been in the division for three years now,” Anderson said.
“All the games we’ve played against each other have been hard fought, neither club has slipped this year.
“The overall competition is getting stronger and you have to stay with it to keep contending.
“The quality of young players is really strengthening the competition.”
Saturday’s clash marks the start of a tough run for the Cardinals who will face the ladder leaders, West Brunswick and Kew on the run home.
They will have a bye after the St Kevin’s clash.
“We’ve had a really challenging period with availability and we’ve managed to win four games through it,” Anderson said.
“It’s helped to set us up for the rest of the year. It’s good to be playing these types of games at the start of the year.”
One player who looms as key is Mia Cowan as the Big V representative continues to enjoy a brilliant season.
“She’s moved into the midfield and is relishing it like so many others do,” Anderson said.
