The real Southern Districts stood up at Tracy Village Oval when they outplayed and outsmarted their opponents Wanderers on a windy day at the suburban ground.
The Crocodiles were without ace ruckman Matthew Dennis at crucial centre bounces and around the ground, but the 22 players that pulled on a red, black and white jumper more than compensated for his absence.
Gone were last week’s goalkicking yips that cost them four points against fierce rivals Palmerston, replaced by a tough, no-nonsense Crocodile side desperate to get their teeth around four premiership points.
Frazer Driscoll’s run and positioning out of defence made him the best player on the ground and the Districts’ midfield showed it will be a potent force when finals football comes around next year.
Districts skipper Dean Staunton was rapt with his side’s performance and the contributions every player made to the win.
“Across the board it would be hard to pick a bad player today and it added to the class of the Ronald Fejos and Jack Menthas who had that polish to go inside 50,’’ Staunton said.
“We used the ball pretty well most of the time but fell away a bit towards the end of the last quarter when it would have been nice to give the game a few final ticks.
“But we’re very happy with the win against a good side like Wanderers.’’
The goalkicking yips that struck the Districts forward line disappeared on a day when the football was shared around by the forward line players.
Nine players kicked goals, including the big marking Sam Dunstan at full forward, who could have finished with six goals on a day when the Wanderers backline had to work overtime to prevent a runaway win by the Crocodiles.
The 46-point win sets up a blockbuster game against the fast rising St Mary’s at Fred’s Pass on Saturday, with the winner of that game entitled to look forward to a top three finish at seasons end.
The Eagles had their good players, but lacked the same patient delivery of their opponents and forward line players prepared to present in front of goals.
West Perth recruit Thomas Boyes never gave up trying in a midfield role and lionhearted ruckman Jobastin Priest was always at the coalface trying to get his side going.

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW
Expect a fierce encounter as Wanderers and Southern Districts clash in Round 10 at Tracy Village Oval.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 4pm, Saturday.
Wanderers are a side on the rise after achieving consecutive wins, against Tiwi and Nightcliff, for the first time this season.
And it’s on the back of strong performances from backline heroes Mitchel Taylor and Brodie Newman.
Their performances have finally been backed up by better kicking in front of posts, and it’s the Muk Muks job to now maintain that momentum.
However, Southern Districts are a tougher prospect, even if they’re coming off a disheartening Round 9 loss at home.
The Crocs have been one of the standout sides early this season and will have been gutted to miss as many shots at goal as they did against Palmerston.
But they’re a side with plenty of talent, particularly from Matt Dennis in the ruck, and will be hoping to bounce back with a vengeance.
