Replay: NTFL Round 9 - Nightcliff v Wanderers

Wanderers have racked up their third win of the 2022-23 season on the back of a ferocious first half in which they kept Nightcliff goalless.

The Tigers did eventually fight back to put some doubt on the result, but the Muk Muks held strong to survive the day as the 9.11 (65) to 7.11 (53) winners.

It was an important result for a Wanderers outfit who struggled to make the most of their opportunities early in the season.

Nightcliff had their chances early on, but as in recent rounds they were inaccurate in front of goal.

And other chances were put to bed by Wanderers’ defence including co-captains Mitchel Taylor and Braedon McLean, the ever-reliable Brodie Newman and former Glenelg captain Chris Curran.

For their part Wanderers were much more clinical in front of goal with youngster Tyson Whyte scoring his first at premier league level.

Jack Burke and Steven Motlop, with a brilliant gather and snap, also scored early on for the Eagles, while Beau O’Connell showed the touches of class which earned him the Nichols Medal.

It was the type of start Wanderers have been denied early this season because of their inaccuracies in front of the posts.

And while they didn’t have it all their own way, due to a Ryan Nyhuis led defence, Wanderers showed why their talent is to be respected.

An O’Connell snap from deep, and a move from Daniel Weetra to the forward line were also both strokes of genius that saw the lead increase.

Nightcliff for all their chances were left goalless for a half for the first time since their 2021-22 prelim final defeat to St Mary’s.

The Tigers did strike back in the second half as they moved John Butcher into the ruck, while Brodie Filo continued to hit his marks.

In tandem with former Port Adelaide hardnut Hamish Hartlett and captain Shaun Wilson, Butcher started to lay on the pressure with goals.

Wanderers at the same time seemed to take their foot off the gas ever so slightly, but they held on long enough just trading goals instead of dominating, as they had in the first half.

And a rookie error from Round 6 Rising Star nominee Stanley Cox, who stepped over the behind line, gifted Motlop a goal which effectively served as the sealer.

“There’s a little bit of relief, it’s really good to get a good win over Nightcliff who haven’t beaten in a couple of years,” McLean said.

“We’re just converting on our chances, before we had missed a few easy goals, we got the ball in there, but we just hadn’t been able to convert

“We got a couple of early ones out there, which got our confidence up and that goes a long way towards winning games.

“We knew they were going to come back, but we just composed ourselves with the footy and I think we did that really well.”

Livestream Preview

Both Nightcliff and Wanderers have a point to prove when they clash in the final match of the round.

And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 7pm, Saturday.

Nightcliff dropping one game has been a rarity in recent years, but three games on the bounce would have been unheard of just a couple of years ago.

The Tigers are wounded and currently sit outside of the finals positions, but that’s also when they’re at their most dangerous.

Former Port Adelaide hardnut Hamish Hartlett will also return to the fold, as the Tigers seek their return to the winners list.

Wanderers are another side with plenty of talent who have been caught out early this year, with only two wins to their name so far.

The Muk Muks believe they have the players to go all the way, and have shown that in spurts, but need to convert their skills into points.

If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
