An unbreakable Palmerston Magpie defensive six and a five-goal haul from opportunist forward Eddie Betts proved too much for Southern Districts at Norbuilt Oval.
Palmerston led at every change and won 8.8 (56) to 4.15 (39) against a woefully inaccurate Districts.
Despite the supremacy of Croc ruckman Matthew Dennis, the fleetfooted hard running Magpies dominated the groundball and clearances through Baxter Mensch and Eric Guthrie and their defence was watertight.
Chief among the defenders was Sam Clohsey but importantly he received support from Lennon Marlin, Neville Jetta and Andrew Green.
Recruited from Werribee in Victoria, Clohesy is relatively new to a key defender’s role.
“Over the last couple of weeks, we have become more settled down back,” Clohesy said.
I don’t know if anyone noticed but we don’t have a rotation – we have a back six and it just seems to work for us.
“At Werribee I play mostly at wing/half-forward although in my junior days I played a bit of halfback but I’m feeling comfortable down there so maybe there will be a switch up in the future when I get back down south.
“We work as a group after training where we get together and work on both defensive and offensive strategies.”
Betts was supreme in the opening term booting two goals while Districts simply couldn’t buy a six-pointer and it took until halfway through the second quarter before the home side got its first through Tomas Boustead and when Taj Stanley chipped in with another, the Crocs were in front for a brief period.
However, Betts and a long bomb from Josiah Farrer got the Maggies back on top from where they never again relinquished the lead.
Because of the low-scoring match, and the emergence of Croc running players Ronald Fejo and Luke Smith finding some Sherrin, Districts were always in with a chance but woeful finishing and stout Palmerston defence which also included Ashton Hams who just got better as the game became tight towards the end.

Livestream Preview
AFL champion Eddie Betts will return to the fold at Palmerston when they take on an in-form Southern Districts.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 4pm, Saturday.
The Crocs are flying at the moment, sitting top of the table and currently hold an undefeated record at home.
They have proven they have the side to get the business done, but were lucky last week to escape with the win against PINT.
At home though they’ve created a fortress and will be hard to get the better of, and have former Magpie Matt Dennis in the ruck ready to get the job done.
Meanwhile, Palmerston are still more than in the fight for the top spot here sitting in third, despite a loss last week in the Gary Ablett Jr match vs St Mary’s.
They’re a side who have come a long way from last season and have plenty of strong names in their number to get the business done.
The Magpies will welcome back former AFL players Betts and Neville Jetta.
There will also be a bit of feeling for Josiah Farrer and Jonathan Farrar who made the switch from Crocs to Palmerston in the off-season.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
