Wanderers have put themselves right back into finals contention after a fourth quarter surge in their Round 11 match against Palmerston.

The Muk Muks may have had a difficult start to the season, but with a 9.8 (62) to 7.2 (44) win they now have four wins to put themselves back into the mix.

Palmerston entered the match with the most prove after being handed forfeits for breaching the player fly-in rule in Rounds 8 and 9.

It meant the Magpies found themselves shifted from fourth to fifth on the table during the week, and the opening exchanges proved they wanted to make amends.

Palmerston surged from the word go with Josiah Farrer and Baxter Mensch racing out of the midfield to try and pile on the scores early.

The black and white outfit flooded the forward 50, and despite some massive defensive efforts from Wanderers were able to come away with a goal through Heath Morgan-Morris.

However, with their ruck ascendency with Ed Simpson in the middle and Beau O’Connell and Steven Motlop around the ball Wanderers were quick to strike back.

And up front in the goal square Liam Patrick made sure those chances didn’t going to waste both kicking a couple of goals for himself and assisting some more.

The Magpies built their way back into the match through the middle half with Steven Lampton and Rodney Nagawalli playing perhaps their best matches of the season.

Mensch dominated for Palmerston in the midfield racking up possession after possession, and finding his way through the contests.

Alijah Davey on debut was also lively as he pushed to get himself a goal, but it was multiple Dennis Dunn winner Will Farrer who made the most impact for the Magpies up front.

Palmerston were also pushed on by Ben Nason, who was an important contributor alongside Mensch, and Ben Power, who was a constant in the ruck all day.

But for all their busy contributors Palmerston could never build a significant enough lead to rid themselves of Wanderers.

O’Connell was a constant charging out of the midfield and with Simpson moved up forward later in the match the Muk Muks had plenty of go-to men to chip away at the scoreboard.

For the Eagles misfortune in front of goal had been a constant all season, but their luck shifted in the final quarter with Simpson popping one through, and Patrick managing a fourth quarter double.

And a fifty given against Power gave Thomas Boyes an easy set shot to finish off the job.

“That was a super important win for us considering it hasn’t been the best start to the season we’ve had in the past couple of years,” Simpson said.

“We know they’re such a good team, they would have been fuming they had some points taken off them and they came out and played a really good brand of footy.

“We knew it was going to be a grind. They came out and really hit us physically, but we were able to build the scoreboard pressure we some fortunate kicks.

“We’ve just been focusing on the basics and it was really pleasing to get the result.”

Livestream Preview

Palmerston Magpies and Wanderers will both have a point to prove when they clash at TIO Stadium.

And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 7pm, Saturday.

Palmerston have flown high in the 2022-23 season, but last week against PINT had one of their most disappointing losses of the year, only kicking three goals.

It’s a result the Magpies will be hoping to quickly forget and prove was a one-off blip, but a lot will come down to which players they put up forward.

There’s still a lot of talent in this Palmerston unit with Baxter Mensch and Eric Guthrie two of the best performers in the league.

Meanwhile, Wanderers have not enjoyed the most fruitful of starts to their year and only have three wins to their name from nine games.

And after a brief spark of form once more succumbed to a heavy loss against Southern Districts last week.

Either way both sides will be hoping to reverse their fortunes with a win here, potentially undoing the rut they currently find themselves in.

If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
