AFTER 205 games and seven premierships with St Marys, former skipper Shannon Rioli stepped out in the Tiwi Bombers colours for the first time in the match against Waratah played at Gardens Oval.
However, even the extra piece of Rioli magic produced late in the second quarter when he received a tap from ruckman Majak Daw that resulted in a dance through opponents and a goal, didn’t help the islanders achieve back-to-back victories and they were defeated by Tahs 16.13 (109) to 10.10 (70).
The red and white’s led at every change after jumping out to a 25 point lead at the first break, and although the Bombers came back in the second, kicking four goals to two, it was Waratah who had a better spread of winners throughout the game.
Tahs defence was rock solid where Will Clark and Daniel O’Dwyer were impassable while small forward Jayden Magro (five goals) was a constant menace to all defenders.
Tiwi also had winners in speedy half-forward Kim Kantilla and they closed ranks in defence after Darcy Hope snared two first term majors.
Experienced players Sam Darley and Harley Bennell got plenty of the ball while Sam De Sousa was tireless in the ruck against Arnold Kirby and Mitchell Jorgensen.
But despite the loss in his first outing, all eyes were on Rioli after his distinguished career at Saints, and he is now a committed Bomber.
“I’m pretty happy with how we went, there were times in that second quarter when after a bit of push and shove, I felt we got on top,” Rioli said.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t convert our chances in the third and we probably got a bit tired towards the end.
“I need to say that I was emotional before the game and was nearly brought to tears by the speech that Brenton (Toy) gave and had to take a moment to gather myself before getting back into the zone.
“I’m really happy to be part of this group and am looking forward to the journey.”

Livestream Preview
A rejuvenated Tiwi Bombers will be hoping to keep their newfound momentum alive when they face-off against Waratah in Round 6.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 6pm, Saturday.
Tiwi broke a 988 day drought in Round 5 beating PINT on their return to Wurrmiyanga Oval.
In that win the Bombers looked like their dangerous selves once more and have the ex-AFL talent in Majak Daw, Harley Bennell and Sam Darley to take that form forward.
Expect some more theatrics and excitement this weekend against Tahs as Tiwi also welcome St Mary’s champion Shannon Rioli to the fold.
But Waratah are an elite side in their own right and have proven that over the past few seasons.
Brodie Carroll and Dylan Collis have guided their side well in the opening rounds, and will be hoping they bounce back after a loss to Nightcliff last week.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
