NTFL 2022-23: Waratah vs Palmerston Magpies Round 4 livestream

Waratah’s backline showed its class to hold off a fast-finishing Palmerston at Gardens Oval. Watch the replay.

Replay: NTFL - Waratah v Palmerston (Round 4)

Waratah’s rock-solid defence held a fast-finishing Palmerston out long enough to come out trumps at Gardens Oval.

Waratah were looking for a response following their Round 3 defeat to Southern Districts and they showed that intent starting quickly to beat the Magpies 10.10 (70) to 8.9 (57).

Jayden Magro took full advantage of a rare spill from Palmerston’s Nichols Medalist Eric Guthrie deep in the backline to kick the opening goal.

But Palmerston were quick to respond using their midfield standouts such as Baxter Mensch and Josiah Farrar to get the ball down the field.

And it was AFL star Eddie Betts who scooped up the reward kicking true to pull one back for the Magpies.

It was the only dent put in Waratah’s armour in the opening exchanges.

The side in red and white dominated the opening half from there creating opportunity after opportunity through their midfield headed by 100 gamer and captain Brodie Carroll.

But most pivotal to Tahs’ success was their unyielding defence.

Daniel O’Dwyer gave another massive performance in the backline aided by vice-captain Dylan Collis, Jake Bowd and the second 100-gamer in James Arratta.

Magro, Darcy Hope and Tom Cree were busy for Waratah across the ground winning the contested ball and putting Palmerston on the back foot preventing any early come back.

As much resistance as they gave the Magpies did make it easy at times giving 50s at pivotal moments including a double-penalty from Jonathan Farrar which gave Cree an easy chance.

Neville Jetta however helped keep the score reasonable for the visitors putting in more than one block to stop goals going through.

Palmerston did come back in the second half, a thing they’ve become known for in recent weeks, as Guthrie and Tristen Waack started to busy themselves in the midfield.

Bit by bit they brought the scoreline back with Betts bagging four goals throughout the night and at times it looked like they could claw the game back.

However, the Tahs defence responded as it needed to and disrupted Palmerston’s ball just enough times to halt the comeback.

“It’s an absolute honour to play for Waratah and to get 100 games is just unreal,” Carroll said.

“We knew after how we went down last week we had to respond and with both me and Jimmy (Arratta) playing our 100th the boys were fired up.

“I’ve known Jimmy since my first game here and we’ve been playing together the whole time, he’s the heart and soul of the club and it’s an honour to share this with him.

“It was just a grind I suppose and that quick start helped us a lot and the boys really stood up and got that contested ball for us. We got challenged and we responded.”

Waratah will be looking to make an impression when they host a star-studded Palmerston at Gardens Oval.

And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 6.30pm on Friday.

It’s the second home game of the season for Waratah, and under lights in front of their own fans they will be primed for the win.

However, they come into the match with plenty of intent after losing to Southern Districts in Round 3, and will be wanting to make amends.

On the flip side Palmerston are currently sitting pretty at the top of the table after bringing the pressure against Nightcliff.
