NTFL 2022-23: Tiwi Bombers vs PINT Round 5 livestream

Replay: NTFL Round 5 - Tiwi vs PINT

The Tiwi Bombers have tasted victory for the first time in almost three years in Men’s Premier League, returning to their pacey brand of old in a stirring 15-point win over PINT at Wurrumiyanga.

It was an historic day on Bathurst Island, with Tiwi’s women’s team contesting its first game at home, and the Bombers, who last won in the NTFL’s top flight in February, 2020, ensured PINT’s first foray (by ferry) to the islands ended in a loss.

Brenton Toy’s men were back to their fleet footed best with Tristan Singh-Lippo burning up the turf and Dion Munkara equally eye-catching with ball in hand, winning 12.13 (85) to 10.10 (70).

Bolstered by the inclusions of former AFL players Majak Daw and Sam Darley, whose decision making and kicking skills were a class above, Tiwi simply ran PINT off their legs in the heat.

After the game, a beaming Toy said he had taken his wife’s advice mid-week that playing was actually the best way to practice and his squad had understood that “losing is part of learning”, after a string of heavy defeats in 2022-23.

“It was probably something my wife helped me understand in the week. We are playing to practice,” Toy said, believing the Tiwi community had felt the club’s winless streak as much as the players.

“It’s taking us weeks and weeks on Saturdays to practice our game style.

“But we knew it was going to come eventually.

“To see everyone experience that winning feeling, it means so much.”

He described two-goal contributor Daw, who will also play next Saturday against Waratah for the Maurice Rioli Cup, as a “beautiful human being”.

“He’s just fit in so well, this is an incredible experience for ‘Maj’,” he said.

“To come here and play at Bathurst Island … on a community oval in front of an Aboriginal community is just something our people will never forget, and no doubt something Majak will remember.”

Earlier, while owning a good chunk of the play for most of the first half, the Bombers were unable to reflect it on the scoreboard; their momentum thwarted by two posters.

However, Toy’s speedsters suddenly exploded into life in the backend of the second stanza, with brilliant six-pointers to Munkara and Singh-Lippo, both returning from suspension.

A super lively Brendan Kantilla also complemented a couple of fine intercepts with a roost from outside 50 which somehow found its way home.

For the Greenants, its clearance king in Brayden Taylor was busy, with an exceptional pass to Thomas Schott who opened the visitor’s account with a maximum.

However, it was answered by an accurate set shot from debutant Daw, who energised the crowd anytime he went near the leather, as if he was a 200-game Tiwi veteran.

Coming off a 94-point hiding against Nightcliff last Saturday, the Bombers placed far more pressure on the ball carrier and their defence held up too, triggering plenty of transition from PINT turnovers.

While the margin rarely extended beyond three goals, it never really felt like the Greenants were going to mount a serious charge, despite team lifters from Jett Trotter and Silver Yousif in the second half.

Daw, who marked in the goal square for his second major, deep in the final term in front of a fence lined with besotted fans, said he was getting an education both on and off the field.

“It’s so different, the heat, the locals, just learning so much about Indigenous culture,” he said.

“How people go about things. They’re wonderful people (on Tiwi).”
