Replay: NTFL Round 10 - Tiwi Bombers v St Mary's

An inaccurate St Mary’s managed to keep the scoreboard ticking just enough to see off a passionate Tiwi Bombers in a scorcher at TIO Stadium.

The Green Machine made it five wins in a row despite their wayward kicking in front of goal winning 15.18 (108) to 9.6 (60).

St Mary’s looked to dominate the possessions from centre bounce, but found plenty of their clean ball smothered by Tiwi’s pressure game.

The Bombers defence comprised of David Kruse, Nick Hooker and a very busy Jack Adamson ensured Saints weren’t given an easy afternoon and make sure Round 2 would not be repeated.

The on-field leadership of former Gold Coast Sun Harley Bennell also hugely benefitted the side as he spurred his adopted side on.

Despite all the pressure it was still Saints who scored first as Mitch Musgrove booted one through the posts.

But even it looked like it would shower goals for St Mary’s following scores for Brandyn Grenfell, Dylan Landt and Nate Paredes, Tiwi kept their heads up and stayed in the contest.

Bombers’ great Dion Munkara was everywhere for his club, while Stanley Tipiloura was also busy working out of the midfield.

The Bombers kicked off the second quarter the more energetic side and a Paddy Heenan dash out of the backline to clear a ball put his side right back into the contest.

However, for all their efforts and craft the Saints were still the dominant side coming out of midfield with Landt and Paredes racking up possessions.

Kieran Parnell, Lucas Jellyman-Turner and Jacob Long didn’t let much through despite the pressure coming their way and Saints would have been further ahead were accuracy on their side.

Grenfell managed to grow his goal haul out to five, but last year’s leading goal-scorer Jackson Calder had a rare case of the yips.

The tall forward never gave up from offering himself for the score, but marks and the middle of the posts often evaded him.

Calder finally got his goal when captain Paredes, who nobody was able to tag, gifted him the ball in front of the posts.

It wasn’t just Calder who missed chances as plenty of Saints opportunities went wayward on what could have been a more dominant showing, but still the scoreboard ticked in their favour.

“Good result, apart from the last quarter where we let a few in, but we did well in the heat and to be able to win as we did was really impressive,” Grenfell said.

“We just had to limit the turnovers and make sure we used the ball well. They were obviously pretty dominant when they got the ball back so we just had to get those passes right.

“It was good to get on the end of a few goals, our midfield played really well and I’m just the one at the end of the chain, but it’s nice to kick a few goals every now and then.

“Having two blokes (me and Calder) over 6’5 is very handy for our team and makes us more dominant up forward, but obviously still some stuff for us to learn.

“We started slow, but to win five in a row means we’re on a bit of a roll, hopefully we can keep that going into Christmas and finish off strong.”

Tiwi got their mojo back late in the final quarter, and though they were unable to win perhaps the better side in the fourth quarter kicking five goals.

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW

St Mary’s will be hoping to make it five wins in a row when they come up against a spirited Tiwi Bombers at TIO Stadium.

And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 2pm, Saturday.

The reigning premiers St Mary’s started their season slowly succumbing to three early losses, but have since bounced back and quickly risen up the table as a result.

They’ve got star power right across the field from their tall forwards to their steadfast defence, the latter which has got them out of trouble plenty of times.

Tiwi haven’t quite enjoyed the results they would have liked this season, but there are clear signs of progress as the side has become more competitive.

Players such as Harley Bennell and Shannon Rioli will be looked to save the side from shipping 200+ points as they did last time they faced St Mary’s.
