Nightcliff Tigers have snapped a five-match losing streak and saved their finals hopes with a scrappy come from behind victory against Palmerston.
Both sides came into the match with a point to prove after their strong starts to the season were washed away by consecutive losses.
But it was Nightcliff, who were also celebrating significant milestones for Shaun Wilson and Daniel Bowles, who triumphed jumping on top late in the piece to win 8.11 (59) to 7.5 (47).
It was Palmerston who struck first wanting to preserve their spot among the finals berths heading into the Christmas break.
Cam Pedersen found himself on the right end of some strong work from his midfield led by Eric Guthrie and Baxter Mensch.
The major would be the only one to come from the opening period as the sides exchanged possessions on the back of their midfields, but neither forward line could assert dominance.
Brodie Filo was the man trying to get things going for the Tigers, and had the ball on a string, while young gun Petros Politis was also busy.
But as much as they tried they could not break through the Palmerston defence led by Ashton Hams.
The Nightcliff defence was also firing with Ryan Nyhuis, Nathan Brown and Daniel Bowles all putting the pressure on, meaning only a massive delivery from Phil Wills could break through for Magpies.
The game finally broke open in the third quarter and it was then Nightcliff started to find some ascendency and the ball finally found its way through the
But still Palmerston kept their noses ahead as Rodney Nagawalli and Steven Lampton showed their class, while Guthrie and Mensch directed the midfield.
It wasn’t until the final quarter and a half that Nightcliff came away with the reward for their effort as Shaun Wilson belted the ball through in his 200th NTFL match.
And a classy finish from debutant Calvin Peris Chong got the Tigers players on their feet as they were finally within a sniff of their first win since Round 5.
Palmerston kept coming trying to find routes back into the contest, but with the scoreboard pressure now against them they could do little to stem the tide.
“We’re pretty relieved, five losses in a row is where you start to forget that winning feeling, so we had to band together to get the job done,” Wilson said.
“All our losses were within three goals so we’ve been there and knew that, but there’s only so many times you can be there without winning before it gets out of grasp.
“We probably hadn’t had enough moments over the past five weeks, but when it was on the line we able to come up and produce some of those moments and you just feel the momentum off that.
“To play 100 games for Nightcliff is a huge achievement, I’m in debt to the club and I feel I owed them every effort I had in me.
“And to play 200 NTFL games overall is also a proud achievement. To be able to hang in there, it doesn’t get any easier as you get older, is something I will look back on with pride.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW
Palmerston vs Nightcliff is sure to be an exciting clash as both sides need to bounce back from recent ruts in form.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 5pm, Saturday.
The Magpies haven’t officially won since Round 6, at which stage they looked as if they were in for a promising season.
However, fortune has since changed through player fly-in breaches and missed opportunities in front of goal.
But there is still plenty of fight in this Palmerston side with Baxter Mensch and Sam Clohesy among the star performers raring to get the job done.
Meanwhile, Nightcliff have perhaps had a worse go of it with their losing streak extending back to Round 5, when they beat Waratah.
And while there’s strong players left and right within the Tigers’ squad they’ve yet to prove they can contest it with the very best sides this season.
Which sets up a very exciting match-up between the pair as one losing streak will almost certainly come to an end.
This is the time for one of the two clubs to step up, and prove they want to make finals.
