Laksa queen Amye Un to run for Darwin Council

LAKSA queen Amye Un will put her name forward at Darwin council’s Lyons by-election this year, with nominations for the 12th alderman position on council opening next week

LAKSA Queen Amye Un will put her name forward at Darwin council’s Lyons by-election this year, with nominations for the final position on council opening next week.

A familiar face to most Darwin residents, the businesswoman said on Facebook she is looking to transition “from cooking girl to politic(s)” with opportunity, a history of family politics and to give a voice and power to the people spurring her on.

“As an Australian migrant, now time to say thanks to Australian Government and Australian People’s, (who) already give me opportunities,” she said on her Facebook page.

“To respect this opportunity I (will) take it, joint with communities, locals, and support by NT Government like to make Darwin a better place.”

The West Timorese immigrant is also taking inspiration from another colourful politician in her quest to make Darwin great again.

“Looking back on Senator Pauline Hanson’s life story, (she went) from a fish and chips businesswomen to entering Parliament House in Canberra,” she said.

“If she can do it why not Amye, Laksa Queen of Darwin.”

In September last year she said, if elected, people could expect a greener Darwin, with her intentions for the city made clear in the viral video above.

“If I were elected I will change Darwin to become green and beautiful,” she said.

“No nonsense or too much talking, just action. We need action.

“It make me so sad because I care about Darwin but now it’s a wasteland.”

“If I became lord mayor I won’t sit my arse in the chair.”

Nomination period runs from February 7 until February 13, with voting taking place on February 29, before results are announced 10 days later on March 9.
