The $7.5 million project, funded by the NT and Commonwealth Governments, will allow for better transport for locals and visitors and will provide a number of economic and occupational benefits to the Island.
Tiwi Land Council chief executive Andrew Tipungwuti said the pontoon would act as a corner stone for future infrastructure.
“This gives us access for our communities, our workers, transport in general and using our services here with the SeaLink Ferry,” he said.
“Tiwi strive for investment so that we have opportunity for securing training and better jobs in the future.”
The pontoon, which was funded by the NT Government and the “Building Better Regions” and the “Aboriginal Benefit Account” has seen 4,500 hours put in by Tiwi Islanders.

SeaLink general manager Angela Piper said the pontoon will greatly enhance the experience of visitors using the service, who previously had to disembark from the ferry onto a smaller boat, before walking off the boat onto the sand and rocks of Nguiu beach.
