VIRAL video icon Amye Un’s bid to become Darwin’s next lord mayor is building momentum.

The owner of Laksa House Warung Ibu Amye, Ms Un said previous lord mayors didn’t stack up.

“Lord mayor George Brown, he’s the best lord mayor. When he left, he left a beautiful Darwin for us,” she said.

“Fong Lim left only parking tickets for us, more and more parking tickets.

“It’s not just the government watching the public, the public watch what the local government does too.”

Ms Un said her roots, from an upbringing on a farm in remote Timor, would hold her in good stead in representing the community.

“In my term, if God allowed me to become lord mayor, I want to make Darwin a better place not because I have skill but I have experience,” she said.

“These are different – skill and experience. If you study in a first-class university but you don’t have experience it’s rubbish. I want to do something for Darwin.”

Ms Un said the Government had contacted her to say it would plant some plants of her choosing but she said it should be a community-based solution.

“It’s not what I want, it’s what the people in Darwin want and what the Government can do,” she said.

“We just need green and beauty, not rubbish … we have so many native plants in Darwin.”

Ms Un was swamped with support with phone calls from Noosa, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney until 1.30am forcing her to close her shop for a lunchtime nap on Tuesday.

The next Darwin council election will be held in 2021.
