SMITH St Mall will not be held and incorporated into a recently launched state square plan, despite recent revelations it is still owned by the NT Government.

For the past 30 years Darwin Council was under the impression it owned Smith St Mall, but an administrative bungle meant the CBD strip actually still belonged to the Territory Government.

Infrastructure Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler said while the government still intends to hand the mall back to Darwin council it would explore how it could be developed in collaboration with State Square.

“One aspect of the Civic and State Square master plan is to connect the mall to the Waterfront,” she said.

“This will create cool, green spaces for the whole community, including families, friends and tourists to enjoy through activated spaces, events and public gatherings.”

Ms Lawler said the project had great potential.

“The mall is a great place for people to eat, shop for a unique item and be entertained,” she said.
