Amye's 'we need green' rant'

A Stuart Park business owner has hit out at Darwin council for the lack of greenery in Darwin, in particular lining the Stuart Hwy.

Laksa House Warung Ibu Amye owner Amye Un posted a video on Facebook on Monday night and said she was sick of the lack of greenery outside her shop.

The video has now grabbed much attention and in an interview with NT News she went a step further.

Frustrated with Darwin Council, Amye said she was considering running for mayor herself to make Darwin green again.

“Yes I want to,” she said.

“If I were elected I will change Darwin to become green and beautiful.

“No nonsense or too much talking, just action. We need action.

“It make me so sad because I care about Darwin but now it’s a wasteland.”

But back to the video.

“It’s a very, very dead garden … where’s the green, City council? City council what will you do,” she said in the video.

“Every day I sit and the front of my shop and I see not one (beautiful piece) of greenery in front of my eyes.

“This garden makes me sick.”

The video showed more rubbish in the garden beds than thriving plants.

“This is the only flora we get in our garden,” she said, pointing to a discarded Flora spread container lid.

“All this rubbish … embarrassing and every day its passed by politicians, by businessmen, by tourists.”

The disgruntled shop owner said tourists tell her it looks like Darwin

“The job to fix up the garden and make it look green is for city council.

“If I became lord mayor I won’t sit my arse in the chair.

“I want you Mr Big boss of city council to borrow my stick so you can whack your staffs’ arse and ask them to wake up and do their job.”

Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the gardens were not under the management of Darwin council but the NT Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL).

“She’s gone to all this trouble to get mad at the wrong person, I’m not in charge of it,” he said.

“But I appreciate why she’s frustrated and she’s not the only one.”

A DIPL spokesman said they had encountered water pressure and service issues replacing the irrigation along sections of the Stuart Hwy in Stuart Park.

“The new replacement irrigation system being installed, is due to be complete at the end of the month,” he said.

“The plants located on this verge (spider lilies) are a hardy plant that will produce new growth once water levels increase.”

“The department will monitor the landscaping and will commit to an appropriate planting schedule.”
